Taking Care of Lophophora Plants Indoors and Outdoors (Garden)

Lophophora is more forgiving of a wider range of conditions than many desert cacti but still demands excellent drainage and careful watering. Outdoors in frost-free or nearly frost-free arid climates (USDA zones 9–11), plant in full to partial sun on raised, well-drained limestone-amended beds or rock gardens. Provide protection from intense midday summer sun for younger plants and from winter wet and hard freezes. Water thoroughly during the hot growing season when the soil is dry, then allow complete drying; reduce or withhold water in winter.


Indoors, place in the brightest available location—ideally a south-facing window or under strong grow lights for at least 6–8 hours of intense light daily. Use a gritty, mineral-heavy mix (pumice, coarse sand, perlite, with added limestone chips or crushed shell to raise pH slightly toward the alkaline side preferred in habitat, plus a modest organic component). Unglazed terracotta pots are ideal. Water with the soak-and-dry method: water deeply only when the soil is bone-dry, roughly every 2–4 weeks in summer depending on conditions, and keep nearly dry in winter dormancy (especially if temperatures fall below 10°C). Ideal growing temperatures are 20–32°C by day with cooler nights; protect from frost. Good air circulation is important. Fertilize sparingly during the growing season with a diluted cactus fertilizer. Overwatering remains the leading cause of loss; plants tolerate drought far better than excess moisture. Gradual acclimatization to stronger light prevents scorching.
