What Is Grafting and How to Do It with Lophophora

Grafting serves the same purposes for Lophophora as for other slow-growing cacti: dramatically faster growth of seedlings, rescue of weak or rotting plants, and production of multi-headed clumps more rapidly. Common, highly compatible rootstocks include Trichocereus/Echinopsis species (San Pedro, Peruvian Torch, etc.), Harrisia jusbertii, Myrtillocactus, Hylocereus, and Pereskiopsis for micro-grafts of very small seedlings.
The process is best done when both stock and scion are in active growth. Sterilize tools carefully. Cut the rootstock flat across (preferably in soft current-season tissue) and chamfer or bevel the outer edges of the ribs so that contraction during drying does not lift the scion. Cut the Lophophora scion cleanly just below the head (or use a small seedling), creating a fresh, moist surface. Align the vascular rings of stock and scion so they overlap at least partially—complete concentric placement is not required, but contact between the rings is essential for nutrient flow. Press the surfaces firmly together to eliminate air pockets, then secure with rubber bands, tape, or a protective covering that maintains contact without crushing the soft tissue. Keep the graft in a warm, shaded, dry environment for 1–3 weeks while the tissues unite. Avoid watering until the union is solid. Once successful, the scion will begin to swell and grow rapidly on the vigorous rootstock. The original base of a beheaded Lophophora can often be replanted and may produce new offsets. Clean cuts, speed, proper alignment, and careful aftercare are the keys to high success rates.
