Lophophora: Species Description and Natural Habitat

Lophophora is a small genus of spineless, button-like cacti in the family Cactaceae, best known for the species Lophophora williamsii (commonly called peyote). The genus contains only a few species, with L. williamsii being the most widespread and well-documented; related taxa such as L. diffusa occur in more restricted southern ranges. Plants are typically low-growing and geophytic, with the photosynthetic stem often sitting nearly flush with or slightly above the soil surface. Stems are soft-fleshed, gray-green to blue-green (sometimes yellowish or reddish under stress), flattened to domed with a deeply depressed center, and measure roughly 2–7.5 cm in height and 4–12 cm in diameter. They may remain solitary or, with age, branch into multi-headed clumps of dozens of buttons. Ribs (usually 5, 8, or 13, occasionally more) are broad, rounded, and low, sometimes weakly tuberculate. Areoles lack spines entirely and instead produce dense tufts of soft, woolly hairs (the feature that gives the genus its name, from Greek words meaning “crest-bearing”). Flowers are small, campanulate, diurnal, and nestled in the apical wool; they are typically pink to white (rarely other shades) and appear mainly in spring to early summer. The plant possesses a large, fleshy, carrot- or turnip-shaped taproot that stores water and nutrients. Fruits are small, club-shaped, and contain black seeds.
In habitat, Lophophora williamsii is distributed across the Chihuahuan Desert and Tamaulipan thorn scrub regions of southern Texas (primarily near the Rio Grande in counties such as Presidio, Terrell, Val Verde, Jim Hogg, and Starr) and northern to central Mexico (states including Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí, Zacatecas, and Durango). It grows at elevations from about 100 to 1,500–1,900 meters, almost always on or near limestone hills, calcareous soils, alluvial fans, and rocky flats. The climate is arid to semi-arid with hot summers, cooler winters, and highly seasonal, often sparse rainfall. Plants are frequently partially buried or cryptic among scrub vegetation, which helps protect them from extreme heat, cold, and herbivory. Growth is extremely slow in the wild—often taking decades to reach flowering size—and individuals can live for many decades. The species is adapted to periodic drought by retracting into the soil and relying on its substantial taproot.
