Copiapoa cinerea v. Tal Tal, albispina (Antofagasta, Chile) is a rare and site-specific form of Copiapoa cinerea, native to the Tal Tal region of northern Chile. The name albispina refers to the characteristic white spines that distinguish this population from other local forms.
This species typically develops spherical to short-columnar stems with a grey-green to silvery-grey epidermis that reflects intense sunlight and retains moisture in its extreme desert habitat. The body is segmented into distinct ribs bearing small areoles with dense, short, white spines. Mature plants often remain solitary for many years or slowly form compact clumps, creating a structured, sculptural appearance.
During its flowering period, Copiapoa cinerea v. Tal Tal, albispina produces bright yellow flowers that emerge from the apex, creating a striking contrast to the muted stem and white spines. Highly adapted to arid conditions, nutrient-poor soils, and intense sunlight, this population grows slowly but exhibits exceptional resilience and is a highly sought-after collector's item for enthusiasts of Chilean desert cacti.
