Pelecyphora Asseliformis

The photo shows some of the Pelecyphora asseliformis plants offered, growing in cactus substrate. The plants are shipped only in good condition and without substrate. They are grown from seed in the EU and are 100% own-root.

Pelecyphora aselliformis (Mexico) is a rare and fascinating species of the genus Pelecyphora, native to the semi-arid regions of central Mexico. It is particularly valued for its striking, sculptural form and its unusual, thorn-like structure.

This species develops small, spherical to slightly cylindrical stems densely covered with short, conical to needle-like tubercles resembling small caterpillars – hence the species name *aselliformis * ("like a small woodlouse/worm"). The epidermis is usually grey-green to blue-green and appears matte, sometimes slightly waxy, to protect the plant from intense sunlight. The tubercles are regularly arranged, giving the plant a geometrically sculptural appearance.

During its flowering period, Pelecyphora aselliformis produces small, pink to purple flowers that emerge from the tips of its tubercles, providing a vibrant contrast to its rather muted body color. Adapted to extreme aridity, calcareous, well-drained soils, and full sun, this species grows very slowly but exhibits exceptional resilience. Its unusual shape, compact size, and precise adaptation to the desert environment make it a highly sought-after specimen for collectors of rare Mexican cacti.
